H5N1 avian influenza outbreak that set out in 2005 has incriminated migratory birds as potential vectors of intercontinental spread of highly pathogenic viruses dangerous to humans. The international study of these viruses and their impact on wild birds showed a more complex reality, they have a lesser role in the spread of these pathogens than questionable farming and trading practices of poultry at international scale. The establishment of a European network providing early warning of such risk on animal and human health is a precautionary suitable measure.
